Context

Climate change, environmental degradation, and security are not separate challenges; they are fundamentally connected. Droughts, floods, and resource scarcity can deepen social tensions, displace communities, and undermine fragile governance, leaving societies more vulnerable to conflict. The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the European Union (EU) have taken a leading role in this field, combining science, policy, and local action to build resilience and turn environmental challenges into opportunities for stability and peace.

THE CHALLENGE

We were brought on this project to shape a strategy and create visual material for the EU–UNEP Partnership on Climate, Environment, Peace & Security. The challenge: bring visibility to the often-overlooked links between climate change, conflict, and security and translate a complex, technical agenda into something clear, relatable, and compelling.

OUR SOLUTION

Climate change and security are ultimately human issues, and the best way to make them tangible is to highlight individual experiences and locally grounded solutions. To do so, we moved beyond the classic development framing of dependency, choosing instead to highlight pride, resilience, and solutions emerging in affected regions. At the same time, we made visible how the EU–UNEP partnership supports these efforts, connecting community action with broader strategies for peace and stability. To ground the narrative, we drew on interviews with UN staff and local stakeholders, gathering insights into the challenges they face and how these shape their daily work.
